As we head towards the end of the year, award season starts brewing. With Grammy nominations coming out this past week, we are here to give you all the information needed to follow this year's academy music awards.
This year's Grammys broke records. To start, Beyonce has made Academy history once again with her album “Cowboy Carter,” earning 11 nominations, the most nominations an album has received in an award season. This makes her not just the most nominated artist, but also the most nominated female artist to grace the Grammys. All we have to say is, thank you, Beyonce.
Billie Eilish also is completing a first in academy history. Eilish has been nominated for all four main categories in the pop field (Best Pop Solo Performance, Best Pop Duo/Group Performance, Best Pop Vocal Album and the relatively new Best Dance Pop Recording). Ariana Grande is the closest to beating this record in the past, but has never been able to achieve all four in the same academy season. Eilish also managed to tie with Taylor Swift for the most nominations for Best Pop Solo Performance, sitting at five.
This year’s Grammys also show that it is a women’s world and we are just living in it. Women dominate the nominations this year. Within the pop awards, only three men have made the list: Bruno Mars, Post Malone, and Troye Sivan. Chappell Roan, Sabrina Carpenter, and Taylor Swift have each received six nominations overall, with each of them having award nominations in the pop category.
Outside of pop, country sees a new leading nominee with Shane McAnally taking the most nominations at 9 and metal has seen the most female nominees at three. Overall, Billie Eilish, Kendrick Lamar, Post Malone, and Charli XCX are in an overall tie for the second-largest number of nominations this year with seven nominations each.
The most anticipated category of this upcoming year comes in at Best New Artist. The 8 candidates for the award have all made big names for themselves over the last year. Artists include Benson Boone, Sabrina Carpenter, Doechii, Khruangbin, Raye, Chappell Roan, Shaboozey, and Teddy Swims.
Grammys season always brings joy and entertainment to many, and here at Movin’ On we celebrate this season. Movin On, just like the Grammys, celebrates great music and artists. Our goal is to make live music accessible to college students here in State College. The Grammys have similar goals, awarding those in the business that have excelled and created beautiful art.
The Grammy’s will be on February 2nd. Make sure to tune in to see your favorites win!
