Artists sliding disses into their songs is a long-standing tradition in the music community. There have been a plethora of notable disses, but, here is a compiled list of five disses in some of today’s favorite songs and albums.
Fleetwood Mac’s "Rumors" album
"Rumors" is one of Fleetwood Mac’s most well-known albums, producing hits like “Dreams,” “Go Your Own Way,” and “Don’t Stop.” Even though this album was wildly successful, the drama that ensued around it was intense.
Christine McVie (accordian) and John McVie were married from 1968 to 1976, divorcing right before the band created this album. Christine was also said to be having an affair with the band's lighting director.
In addition to this, Stevie Nicks (vocalist) and Lindsey Buckingham (guitar) had also just ended their relationship of 5 years. Nicks would then go on to have a short relationship with Mick Fleetwood (drums).
This turmoil caused many of the songs on the album to be direct disses to other members of the band. “Go Your Own Way” was Buckingham’s response to his failed relationship with Nicks. “Don’t Stop” is Christine’s ballad about looking to the future and not in the direction of her past ex-husband.
MGK versus Eminem
It is often said on social media that Eminem is the reason MGK completely switched his genre of music, but some may not know why this has become a trend.
It all started in 2012 when MGK tweeted a distasteful tweet about Eminem’s daughter, Hallie. MGK then dissed Eminem on his song titled “No Reason” with Tech N9ne.
“To remind y’all you just rap, you’re not gods,” MGK said, which many believe is a reference to Rap God.
The rappers then shared disses within their songs throughout the years to come. For example, Eminem dissed Kelly on his song “Not Alike,” Kelly clapped back with “Rap Devil," and then Eminem released “Kill Shot.”
Eminem got the last word in the beef within his song “Unaccommodating” in 2020. He says that the war with MGK is over because he “cleansed him of his mortal sins.”
Drake taunts Rihanna
Drake recently released his highly anticipated album "For All The Dogs." Within his album he takes shots at many of today’s favorite artists, but the most notable is Rihanna.
Drake continuously repeats the word anti, which is the name of Rihanna's 2016 album.
“Why they make it sound like I’m still hung up on you?...I’m anti, I’m anti/ Yeah, and the sex was average with you," Drake said in the beginning of his song “Fear of heights."
Drake and Rihanna have always shared a somewhat rocky relationship. The pair met in 2005 on the set of Rihanna’s music video for “Pon De Replay." Over the next few years, the two share a public friendship, even going on dates and being spotted kissing.
Even though they shared a few romantic moments, Rihanna was insistent on just being friends. On the other hand, it seemed Drake liked her more than a friend.
In 2010, Drake revealed he felt like Rihanna used him. The pair seemed to mend their rocky relationship, sharing many notable steamy performances and songs over the next few years and only having small public disagreements.
In 2018, Rihanna revealed that she and Drake were no longer friends after the public noticed that it seemed very awkward and forced when the pair was around each other. Then that leads to 2023 where Drake disses Rihanna and her partner, A$AP Rocky, on his new album.
Kanye West slights Taylor Swift
During the 2009 VMAs, West interrupted Swift's acceptance speech for her Best Female Video award.
“Taylor I’m really happy for you and I’ll let you finish…But Beyoncé had one of the best videos of all time," West said after jumping on stage.
This is now one of the most memorable moments in award show history. Although the VMAs incident happened many years prior, West threw a diss at Swift on his song “Famous," which was featured on an album, "The Life of Pablo," that was released in 2016.
“I made that bitch famous,” Kanye said about Swift in his song "Famous."
It's not understood why Kanye made the diss so late after the drama unfolded, it's undeniably one of Kanye’s most popular albums and notable songs.
Beyonce's "Lemonade" album
Beyoncé took the world by storm when she dropped her album "Lemonade," along with the film. There was virtually no warning about the album dropping nor any press for it whatsoever.
Many know that this album is a direct diss to her husband, Jay-Z, who cheated on her. The whole album is an emotional rollercoaster displaying everything Beyoncé felt when she found out that Jay-Z cheated on her.
"Try that shit again, you’re going to lose your wife," Beyonce said in her song "Don't Hurt Yourself."
Beyoncé and Jay-Z have since worked out their relationship, but "Lemonade" will forever be one of the most iconic heart break albums.
